10:15 – 11:05 Wilderness Therapy Practices and Programming
Four wilderness therapy programs will share an overview of their current practices and programming.
- Summit Achievement (Stow, Maine) is a licensed and accredited residential treatment center combining the best features of a wilderness program and special-needs boarding school by integrating a residential milieu and traditional academic instruction with outdoor adventure-based therapy.
- True North has been helping families for nearly 15 years using sophisticated clinical methods are combined with an emphasis on experiential learning and community building. Clinicians utilize a strength-based methodology, drawing from various therapeutic modalities.Confluence is a clinically intensive mental health treatment program serving young adults with emotional, substance use, and relational challenges. The program combines wilderness adventure therapy with a residential experience, farming, and comprehensive health and wellness services.
- Legacy Outdoor Adventures for Men and Juniper Canyon Recovery Center for Women are treatment center programs for adults 18-35. Guiding principles include seeing recovery as a way of being, taking a strength-based approach to treatment, fostering individual agency, modeling honorable adulthood and acknowledging the importance of the family.

Keynote Speaker
Michael Gass, PhD, LMFT, is a Professor and the Director of the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Research Center (obhcenter.org) at the University of New Hampshire.
Dr. Gass received his PhD in educational research from the University of Colorado/Boulder and his postdoctoral work in clinical marriage and family therapy. With Drs. Gillis and Russell, he has published the leading textbook in the field (Adventure Therapy published by Routledge Press). Dr. Gass was the inaugural Chair of the AEE Accreditation Council for its first 10 years of existence as well as President of the Board of Directors of AEE in 1990. Some of his current research projects include: Risk management statistics of adventure therapy programs, adventure competencies for therapists, enhancement of NATSAP Practice Research Network database, researching adventure therapy programs with vulnerable populations, cost benefit analyses of outdoor behavioral healthcare programs, supporting emerging scholars/researchers in adventure therapy, and publishing and presenting in traditional mental health/psychology venues (e.g., APA). He is a licensed marriage and family therapist.
