Lessons from the Wolves: My Transformational Journey into Adventure Therapy

This post is part of my reflections on adventure series, where I share personal experiences and insights gained from exploring the wild.

The Call of the Wild

My journey into the world of adventure began as a child, exploring the woods near my home, climbing trees, and dreaming of big adventures. These small, everyday explorations sparked a deep curiosity and a desire to see what lay beyond the familiar. They taught me the value of stepping outside my comfort zone, something crucial for personal growth.

The First Big Leap

At 14, I had the chance to join a group heading into the wilds of Wyoming and Yellowstone—a mix of backpacking and canoeing. The leaders asked for a volunteer to hike 25 miles into the lake and 25 miles out. Most of the kids were more excited about canoeing, but I quickly raised my hand.

Why? I believed I could do it. I was fit and wanted to show confidence, even if I wasn’t entirely sure. But the real reason was the wolves. Raised on David Attenborough documentaries, I loved wildlife, and the wild represented the wildest of wild animals. The elusiveness and rareness of wolves made the idea of seeing or hearing one incredibly exciting.

Embracing the Challenge

Like many young people, I pretended to be brave. I had never done anything like this before, but I wanted to prove myself. This experience taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone is essential. As I set out on the hike, I realized that adventure is not just about the thrill of new experiences, but also about embracing the uncertainties and challenges that come with them. Every step on that trail was a lesson in resilience and adaptability.

A Night to Remember

On our second night, we camped near the lake, ready to hike back the next day. I set up my shelter 20 yards from the group, wanting to be brave and independent, and to capture the view of the lake. During the day, it seemed like an easy and exciting idea. But as night fell, the group only 20 yards away now seemed like a mile away. Lying in my tent, I felt fear, I felt scared, but I was too prideful to move my tent closer.

The Howl of the Wolf

Then I heard it—a wolf howling in the distance, soon joined by others. Suddenly, instead of fear, I felt comforted. I was elated. All the magical moments I had spent listening to David Attenborough narrate wildlife encounters were now unfolding before me. I could even hear David Attenborough’s voice in my head: “The wolf, a hunter. A hunter so strong that it can pull down prey ten times its own weight. So intelligent and capable that primitive man followed it to scavenge from its kills. A hunter which, because of its very success, has now been banished by man to the most remote and barren of wildernesses. And there, listen to the howl of the wolf, the sound of the unknown.”

That night, I fell asleep filled with wonder and excitement. It was one of the best moments of my life.

Lessons from the Wolves

That trip left me with lasting memories and lessons:

1. Resilience: Wolves have adapted to some of the harshest environments, showing us the power of resilience and the ability to thrive even in adversity.

2. Community: Wolves operate within a pack structure, demonstrating the importance of teamwork, cooperation, and supporting one another to achieve common goals.

3. Balance: The reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone restored ecological balance, illustrating how every element of nature plays a vital role in maintaining harmony in our world.

4. Adaptability: Wolves are highly adaptable creatures, capable of surviving and flourishing in various environments. This teaches us the importance of being flexible and open to change.

Finding Your Own Howl

These adventures weren’t just fun; they were transformative. The reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone and their haunting howls are metaphors for the journey our clients undertake. Stepping into the wild, facing challenges, and discovering inner strengths are key steps toward healing and growth.
