Signs and Symptoms of Depression: When to Seek Help for Yourself or a Loved One
Depression doesn’t just affect a person’s mood but can impact all areas of a person’s life. Being able to recognize the warning signs, either in yourself or in a loved one, is very important and is the first step toward healing. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may be time to consider reaching out for professional mental health treatment.
- Persistent sadness or hopelessness
- Lack of motivation or interest
- Sleep or appetite changes
- Substance abuse as a coping strategy
- Isolation, anxiety, or thoughts of self-harm
It is very difficult to watch someone you care about struggle with their mental health. If you think that your loved one is struggling with depression, encourage them to seek help as soon as possible. Make sure to be compassionate and non-judgmental, and assure them that you will be there to support them along the way.
What Makes Our Depression Treatment Program Different?
At our Utah-based treatment center, we take a comprehensive, whole-person approach to mental health treatment. We believe that this is one of the many things that sets us apart from other treatment facilities. Another aspect of our care that sets us apart is our initial psychiatric assessment and diagnosis. Each individual receives a thorough evaluation from experienced clinicians to help ensure a proper diagnosis and to assist in developing a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to their unique needs.
At our facility, we also offer integrated dual diagnosis support for those who are struggling with both depression and substance use disorder. We treat both conditions simultaneously to help ensure we get to the root of each challenge and to promote full and complete healing.
Another aspect of our care that sets us apart from other facilities is the fact that we utilize behavioral health interventions and prioritize wellness-oriented care. We do this by combining evidence-based therapies with holistic practices that promote long-term mental health recovery. Among some of the practices used at our facility are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, nutrition, and fitness.

Evidence-Based Therapies We Use: Proven Modalities That Empower Young Adults
At Legacy Outdoor Adventures, we utilize evidence-based therapies that are tailored toward meeting the unique needs of young adults. We understand that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to treating mental health issues. Because of this, we take on a personalized approach and integrate multiple different kinds of treatment. This includes cognitive behavioral Therapy (CBT) and dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), individual and group therapy sessions, family therapy, support groups, mindfulness practices, and experiential therapy.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Both CBT and DBT are known to be effective methods in helping individuals recognize negative thoughts and behavior patterns. After becoming more aware of these things, they can then work toward replacing these things with healthier and more positive patterns. Both of these treatment methods are also known to be effective in managing emotional distress and developing healthier coping mechanisms for stress.
Mindfulness Practices and Experiential Therapy
At our facility, we utilize both mindfulness practices and experiential therapy. Our clients have the opportunity to take part in meditation, yoga, and nature-based therapy. All of these things can help to provide grounding and promote better overall emotional regulation. They can also serve as useful tools that clients can use in the future to cope with stress or other negative emotions effectively without turning to substance use.
Individual and Group Therapy Sessions
Individual counseling can be very effective in building self-awareness, coming up with realistic goals, and promoting personalized growth. Meanwhile, group therapy sessions can help to provide an environment where our clients can rebuild trust and work on positive communication. This environment also promotes connection between people who are working towards common goals.
Family Therapy and Support Groups
Depression doesn’t just affect the person who is struggling with it. It affects all those around them. Because of this, we offer family therapy and support groups where the loved ones of those struggling can get resources and learn how to best support their family member. Not only does this benefit them, but it also benefits the person in recovery as well and promotes long-term progress.
Levels of Care for Depression Treatment
Every person’s journey with mental health recovery is different. Because of this, we offer a variety of different levels of care to help address each individual’s unique needs and situation.
Residential Treatment Program (RTC)
Our residential treatment program (RTC) provides a structured environment where clients can build healthy routines and receive around-the-clock support. They have the opportunity to participate in the many different treatment options, therapies, and activities that we have available, all while enjoying the beautiful Utah landscape.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) can be ideal for those who might not require residential treatment but can still benefit from therapeutic structure and support as they prepare to transition back to independent living.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) allows our clients to receive the care and support they need while also continuing to maintain their normal routine. This gives them the opportunity to continue going to work or school.
Ongoing Outpatient Treatment and Aftercare
We offer ongoing outpatient treatment and aftercare to promote long-term recovery and to prevent relapse. This is supported through ongoing therapy, medication management, and alumni support so our clients can remain connected to our community.

Holistic and Experiential Support for Mental Health Recovery
We recognize that true mental health healing and recovery go beyond traditional talk therapy. Because of this, we integrate both holistic and experiential treatment options to support the whole person, including their body, mind, and spirit. This included adventure therapy, nutritional wellness, sleep hygiene, peer connection, and accountability.
Adventure and Experiential Therapy
Whether it be rock climbing, wilderness hikes, mountain biking, or fishing, we offer a multitude of adventure therapy options that utilize the great outdoors as a therapeutic tool. These experiences can help to build confidence, greater resilience, and better emotional regulation. They can also help provide a powerful and unique sense of accomplishment.
Nutritional Wellness and Sleep Hygiene
Physical health and mental health go hand in hand, and proper nutrition and good sleep both play a critical role in mental health and long-term recovery. We help our clients build healthy routines centered around a nutritious diet, rest, and self-care. Our team works to educate and support clients to create habits that will boost their energy and mood and help provide the best possible mental health and well-being.
Peer Connection and Accountability in a Supportive Community
Support is one of the most important aspects of long-term healing and recovery and is critical in preventing relapse. We believe that healing happens in a community. Because of this, our program was built to promote peer connection, deep peer bonds, mentorship, and accountability. We strive to ensure that everyone who is a part of our program experiences a sense of belonging.
Building Stronger Connections Through Family Therapy and Education
Mental health recovery is most effective when families have the opportunity to heal together. Because of this, our program ensures that parents, caregivers, and loved ones of the individual in recovery have the opportunity to play an active role in the healing process. This helps to build a strong support system and promote long-term recovery.
Our program helps to engage parents and loved ones in the healing process through therapy sessions, educational workshops, and an open dialogue with our care team. We also help families to learn how to communicate effectively and best support their loved one on their recovery journey. This is done by providing them with the tools necessary to better understand what their loved one is going through.
We also work to address family dynamics and shared stressors that may be connected to a loved one’s mental health struggles. Through therapy, we explore things like family roles, past experiences, and stress. Therapy can help strengthen the family unit, address issues that may not have been discussed openly before, and promote a strong healing environment for the person in recovery.
