From Oregon to Utah: Our Wilderness Therapy Program

Our modern, clinically grounded therapeutic programs use a whole-person, trauma-informed approach to care instead of the punitive boot camp model used by some other adventure therapy programs. We treat people 18 years and older diagnosed with addiction or mental health disorders. Our clinical team has decades of combined experience using proven methods to help clients heal from the effects of substance abuse.

Why Oregon Families Seek Out-of-State Treatment

We provide wilderness therapy for Portland, Oregon, residents seeking help overcoming addictive behaviors, substance abuse, trauma, or mental illness. Our programs utilize an outcome-oriented approach that prepares clients for lasting recovery using experiential and traditional clinical therapies. People from out of state come to Utah for our personalized services and gender-specific programs.

What Makes Wilderness Therapy in Utah Different From Local Options

Our programs use rock climbing, ecotherapy, hiking, survival skills development, ropes courses, and mentors to help clients recover from SUD and co-occurring mental health issues. Outdoor therapies and clinical modalities allow us to treat drug and alcohol addiction, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and reduce chronic stress.

When a Higher Level of Care Becomes Necessary for Young Adults

Some young people with SUD may need higher levels of care before transitioning to partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), or outpatient programs. We treat people from all over the Pacific Northwest, including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Our admissions team ensures clients and their family make educated decisions about their care by providing comprehensive information on each level of care.

Why Portland Families Choose Us

Our approach to treatment goes beyond traditional models by combining clinical sophistication, structured care, and measurable outcomes. At Legacy, every aspect of the program is intentionally designed to support deep, lasting healing, not just short-term stabilization.

Adventure Therapy Integrated With Clinical Treatment

Our program combines adventure therapy three days per week with over 20 hours of structured clinical therapy. This balanced approach helps clients apply therapeutic insights in real-world settings, building resilience, confidence, and emotional regulation in a way that traditional settings often cannot replicate.

Individualized, Whole-Person Treatment
Plans

Every client receives a personalized treatment plan based on a comprehensive evaluation of their mental health, substance use, trauma history, and lifestyle factors. We treat the whole person by integrating clinical care, experiential work, and personal development into one cohesive process.

Trauma-Informed, Clinically Sophisticated
Approach

All care is delivered through a trauma-informed lens, ensuring emotional safety while addressing the underlying drivers of substance use and mental health challenges. Our licensed clinicians provide advanced therapeutic interventions in a structured, supportive environment.

Structured Residential Setting With High Clinical Engagement

As a licensed residential treatment center (RTC), we provide a highly structured environment that supports consistency, accountability, and focus. Clients engage in a full weekly schedule of therapy, adventure-based experiences, and guided reflection designed to promote sustainable change.

Low Client-to-Staff Ratio and Personalized
Attention

With a limited number of clients, our team is able to provide focused, individualized attention. This allows for deeper therapeutic relationships, more responsive care, and a treatment experience tailored to each client’s needs and goals.

Aftercare & Long-Term Recovery
Planning

We believe in comprehensive care and, as such, work with clients for long-term recovery planning. The Summit Graduation Phase is our way of ensuring that clients transition from treatment with the skills and planning needed for success. Our Residential Adventure Therapy Program Features

We provide comprehensive residential treatment as part of a continuum of care. Individualized Treatment Plans

Our proven approach to treatment uses personalized care plans to ensure we address all active conditions and their root causes. We start with gathering information during the admissions interview that will ensure our team provides appropriate care through every stage of treatment. Clinicians monitor progress weekly and tailor services as needed to meet changes in client needs. Our individualized programs give people support that addresses their specific circumstances and needs to reduce the risk of relapse and improve the effectiveness of therapy.

Gender-Specific Programming

Men and women have similar needs during rehabilitation; however, some people may not feel comfortable being vulnerable or sharing their stories in groups with the opposite gender. For example, women may hesitate to ask for advice about managing trauma related to domestic violence in a group with both men and women. Our gender-specific programs eliminate that problem by providing men and women with a safe and structured environment where they heal alongside others who share similar life experiences.

Individual and Group Therapy

Group and individual psychotherapy sessions use skill development, therapeutic exercises, and peer support to help people express themselves and heal from SUD or dual diagnosis. Legacy Outdoor Adventures uses cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and other modalities to treat addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders.

Wilderness Expeditions for Self-Esteem

We utilize multiple forms of experiential therapy, including wilderness and adventure therapy sessions. Outdoor activities in a controlled setting allow clients to practice the skills they learn in psychotherapy. Teamwork and mutual peer support play an essential role in outdoor therapy sessions. Clinicians and field guides encourage clients to uplift and empower one another as they work to overcome challenges.

Medication Management

We offer medication management and psychiatric support when needed. Our clinicians use comprehensive assessments and screening tools to determine if clients may benefit from short-term medication management. The care team collaborates closely with clients and their loved ones, using psychoeducation and other services to ensure clients make informed decisions about their care.

Medication management and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) reduce the effects of withdrawal, allowing clients to focus on the healing process. We do not offer long-term Suboxone maintenance. Clinicians carefully monitor prescribed medications to ensure clients’ safety.

Treating Substance Abuse and Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions

People seeking treatment may have multiple forms of SUD and one or more co-occurring mental health conditions. We treat all active conditions using a whole-person approach to care that addresses physical, psychological, and spiritual wellness. Our programs use experiential and clinical therapy to address the symptoms, side effects, and underlying causes of co-occurring mental health disorders. We help clients manage their conditions using dual diagnosis treatment plans.

How Substance Use and Mental Health Are Treated Together

The lasting effects of chronic substance abuse have a direct impact on mental health. In addition, people with mental health conditions have a higher risk of abusing drugs or alcohol. The complex relationship between addictive behaviors and mental health disorders makes it essential for treatment programs to address all active disorders simultaneously. Legacy Outdoor Adventures utilizes evidence-based clinical therapies and alternative holistic modalities to create tailored care plans that help people heal from addiction and mental illness. Our clinical team has decades of combined experience providing high-quality dual diagnosis treatment to clients in all stages of recovery.

How Integrated Care Supports Dual Diagnosis Recovery

We integrate holistic care and evidence-based therapies that support spiritual, emotional, and physical wellness during rehabilitation. People recovering from chronic substance abuse often benefit from multiple forms of support, including peer, clinical, and life skills development. Our team provides psychoeducation to ensure people in treatment understand how their multiple conditions may interact and our treatment approach for managing them. People with a history of substance abuse, trauma, and mental health issues may require more nuanced care. We have a low client-to-staff ratio that allows us to provide individualized treatment plans that provide multiple types of support for each current diagnosis.

Recognizing When a Young Adult Needs Residential Treatment

Legacy Outdoor Adventures treats young adults using evidence-based therapeutic modalities. We help families recognize the signs their loved one may need professional help recovering from addiction, trauma, or mental health disorders. Young adults over the age of 18 benefit from our residential wilderness programs.

Some of the primary signs that a young adult may need residential treatment include an inability to stop abusing substances, continuing to abuse substances despite negative consequences, a history of relapse, lack of response to traditional outpatient programs, no support system, and a need for greater structure and accountability.

FAQs

Our approach to outdoor behavioral healthcare allows clients to learn essential skills while gaining confidence in real-world situations. Unlike traditional clinical programs in Portland, Oregon, we encourage experiential learning and whole-person care. The hands-on learning and skill development prepare clients for independent sobriety.

Our programs generally last 90 days with the option to extend if clients may benefit from a longer stay. We monitor client progress throughout the recovery process to ensure they receive the level of care they need to successfully achieve and maintain lasting sobriety. Clinicians extend or shorten treatment programs as needed to meet the specific needs of each client.

The length of stay may change during treatment based on the rate of progress or insurance coverage eligibility. We work with families and their loved ones to create a care plan that does not rush the recovery process and takes into consideration all factors impacting client sobriety and mental wellness. Clinicians encourage people to go through a continuum of care, including residential treatment, to ensure the best possible outcomes.

We do not treat adolescents. Our programs accept people 18 and older struggling with substance use disorder and mental health issues. We can provide referrals to trusted treatment facilities for young people under the age of 18. Families can reach out for information on high-quality residential or outpatient programs for adolescents.

Portland, Oregon, and our local Utah community have adolescent treatment centers that can provide services, resources, and ongoing support services to families with troubled teens. We provide referrals to programs that offer high-quality adolescent addiction and mental health rehabilitation treatment.
