Legacy

A New Path to Wellness for California Young Adults

Legacy Outdoor Adventures is a licensed residential treatment center in Utah that provides a hybrid approach to mental health treatment, which combines clinical and adventure-based therapy for lasting recovery. Sometimes, a chance of scenery is necessary to facilitate change, especially for California families.

Why Families in California Look Beyond Local Wilderness Therapy Programs

Many California families search for treatment centers outside their home state for several reasons. There’s a real concern about the effectiveness of local options and long waitlists, as well as a desire for more comprehensive treatment solutions. Distance and structure are sometimes needed to remove an individual from an environment inconducive to healing.
There is a need for programs that offer better oversight, proven outcomes, and integrated therapeutic approaches that combine outdoor experiences with clinical support. This new environment can be the breakthrough needed to help loved ones struggling with difficult mental health challenges. Hence, Utah is the leading destination for families seeking this comprehensive level of care.

Why Utah Is a Leading Destination for Therapeutic Programs

Families choose Utah for wilderness-based therapies as it offers a calmer environment away from stressors typical to California, especially for residents from crowded, major cities. Utah, as well as Legacy, provides clinically supervised outdoor activities with a long history of accredited behavioral health programs. We offer a safe and structured wilderness adventure experience, not survival training or other outdated punitive wilderness models.

Adventure Therapy vs. Wilderness Therapy

No Survival-Style Model
or Isolation

Our outdoor therapy program is nothing like outdated and punitive wilderness therapy modalities commonly associated with the troubled teen industry and others. While we use the wilderness to inspire peace and empowerment, clients live in comfortable, modern cabins with access to showers, laundry, a cafeteria, and more. There is no survival-based model or isolation; we focus on positive and therapeutic experiences.

Residential Treatment With Strong Clinical Support

Legacy is a licensed residential treatment center with a hybrid model that combines clinical support with therapeutic outdoor activities. Clients have access to modern amenities while at Base and access to on-site nursing and psychiatric support.

Evidence-Based Modalities + Experiential Interventions

We utilize experiential therapy as a means to help clients participate in their own recovery. These experiences best help clients who struggled with typical addiction treatment, unlocking new experiences that facilitate positive change and growth.

Outdoor Activities With Therapeutic Intent

The outdoor activities we use aren’t just fun; they have therapeutic purposes designed by our team of clinical mental health professionals. Utilizing adventure therapy and other outdoor activities reduces stress and builds the courage needed achieve long-term recovery.

What Our Adventure Therapy Program Includes

Personalized Treatment Plans

Each client undergoes a clinical assessment once they begin treatment to identify individual needs. This allows us to craft a personalized treatment plan for every client that provides targeted and comprehensive care. All therapeutic and treatment modalities are overseen and conducted by trained and licensed professionals.

Individual Therapy and One-on-One Support

Part of our clinical care includes individual therapy sessions, which give clients a safe and private space to be vulnerable. This one-on-one support helps our clients feel seen and validated, especially when addiction and other mental health challenges can be isolating.

Group Therapy and Peer Support

Clients participate in group therapy for mutual support, healing, and understanding as part of our campfire culture. Learning to give and accept support from others can rebuild trust, build confidence, and encourage self-expression.

Family Therapy and Family Involvement

We believe that family involvement is important for recovery. Because of this, we offer a family program that includes family therapy, support, psychoeducation, and webinars.

Equine Therapy and Experiential Interventions

Our holistic approach to treatment includes experiential interventions that offer clients a chance to find healing through actions, rather than words. Clients participate in local outdoor activities that build character and facilitate healing, such as backpacking, rope courses, equine therapy (interactions and petting, not riding), fishing, and other recreational activities.

Clinician-Led Adventure Activities

(Rock Climbing, Hiking, Outdoor Skill-Building)

Our clinicians are licensed and accredited to lead adventure therapy activities that take clients across the varied terrains of Utah. These activities are designed to build camaraderie and courage while immersing clients within the healing power of nature.

Life Skills, Communication Skills, and Coping Skills Training

Clients learn essential skills needed for lasting recovery in our program, such as basic self-care, life skills, coping skills, and improving communication. We want our clients to leave treatment with the toolset needed to not just remain in recovery, but improve their lives in general.

Trauma-Informed, Evidence-Based Modalities

(CBT, DBT, EMDR if used)

Legacy utilizes a wide range of trauma-informed evidence-based modalities, such as psychotherapies (CBT and DBT) and EMDR, as needed.

Psychiatric Care, Medication Management & Health Care Coordination

Sometimes clients may need medical assistance while in treatment, such as medication management. We collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure that our clients with medical needs are cared for while in treatment.

The Therapeutic Impact of Outdoor Experiences

Legacy Outdoor Adventures helps men and women build confidence and self-esteem through therapeutic outdoor activities. Clients learn to work with peers, which improves communication, trust, and social connections with others. The activities we use help clients develop healthy risk-taking, decision-making, and mental resilience.
Our location was specifically chosen to help clients utilize the power of nature, which can help reduce stress, promote emotional regulation, and serve as a grounding technique. This, along with our outdoor activities, promotes full mind-body integration for holistic wellness.

Daily Life in Our Utah Residential Treatment Setting

Legacy Outdoor Adventures has a structured home base with comfortable, modern cabins for clients to stay in. We are not a wilderness camp, and as such, we have active professional medical and mental health clinicians present each day. Weekly schedules integrate indoor clinical work with outdoor adventure activities.
Clients have time to practice self-care, do chores, or simply enjoy the wilderness around them. These predictable routines support mental health treatment and help clients establish a healthy routine they can use post-treatment.

Levels of Care for California Residents

Residential Treatment as a Stabilizing Step

Legacy is a residential treatment facility, which means you will stay with us for at least 30 days to 90 days. This gives our clients a safe, supportive environment away from triggers so they can focus fully on treatment. Once residential treatment is complete, clients can easily step down into other levels of care to continue their recovery journey.

Coordinated Care With Detox or Inpatient Programs if Needed

Legacy assists clients who need detoxification or other inpatient services, as we understand that these are the first steps that must occur to recover from substance abuse and addiction. To accomplish this, we coordinate care with specialized facilities and then receive clients once they have stabilized so they can continue their care.

Step-Down Options

(PHP, Intensive Outpatient Programs, Outpatient Therapy)

Legacy assists our clients in stepping down into other levels of care. With most to least intensive options being:

Partial hospitalization program (PHP)
Intensive outpatient program (IOP)
Outpatient treatment

These programs vary in how many hours a day and how many days a week clients receive treatment, but all allow clients to go home in the evening. IOPs and outpatient therapy in particular are flexible options that allow clients to return to work, school, and home responsibilities.

Support for Returning Home to California, Idaho, or Colorado

Recovery isn’t over just because treatment is completed. Legacy is here to support you once you go back to your daily life. Our treatment program includes a graduation plan, which includes resources, support, and planning needed for sustained recovery once you return home.

Why Families Trust Our Clinicians and Therapeutic Program

Legacy Outdoor Adventures holds several accreditations from the Joint Commission, the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Council (OBHC), and is licensed by the state of Utah to provide outdoor addiction and mental health care services. As we participate in industry-level data reporting of all injuries and utilize a data-driven outcomes model, you can be assured that your time at Legacy will be safe, compassionate, and transformative.
The team at Legacy consists of experienced behavioral health care providers and medical experts who value helping others achieve their full potential. Our accreditation with the Joint Commission and integrated medical and clinical oversight tell families that we care about their loved ones’ well-being. Other services we offer alongside treatment are aftercare services and family support for long-term recovery planning.

Treatment for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

Anxiety Disorders, Depression & Mood Disorders

Our Utah rehab center is prepared to help clients who struggle with anxiety and mood disorders, which are some of the most commonly occurring mental health disorders. This includes conditions such as social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, and more.

Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Challenges

Mental health issues commonly co-occur with substance use, which is also known as a dual diagnosis. A dual diagnosis can only be treated with a specialized program that addresses each mental health challenge at once. For example, trauma is one of the leading underlying causes of addiction. If you do not address the trauma but treat the addiction, the underlying cause remains, which can result in relapse. Our dual diagnosis treatment is specially designed to address these personal and unique needs.

Addiction Treatment for Substance Abuse or Substance Use

Legacy treats a wide range of addiction and substance use disorders, such as alcohol addiction, prescription drug addiction, and more. Part of why we chose our location is to separate clients from commonly available substances, such as alcohol. This gives clients time to recover away from triggers and can rejoin society once they have the coping mechanisms in place to prevent relapse.

Support for Mental Health Disorders and Behavioral Issues

Clients with behavioral issues and mental health disorders, such as conduct disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), are all welcome at Legacy. We strive to help our clients forge a healthier path forward with personalized care and a developed toolkit of coping strategies.

Support for California Families

Transparent Communication Throughout Treatment

Families are kept informed about their loved one’s progress through weekly updates and collaborative treatment reviews through video conferences, as we value clear communication and transparency at Legacy.

Travel Guidance From California to Utah

We understand that traveling out of state can be stressful. To help families, our admissions team is available from 6 am to 10 pm to answer questions and guide you through basic travel logistics. We are here for you every step of the way when it comes to travel planning.

Working With Your Insurance Provider

Potential clients from California must have strong out-of-network insurance. We will help you verify your insurance and work with your insurance provider to help get you or your loved one the care they need.

Aftercare and Long-Term Support

We prepare our clients for life after treatment through our aftercare and alumni support initiative. Alumni have access to our local sober community program and ongoing check-ins to ensure optimal health. We help California residents find outpatient and ongoing support options that are local to their home so they may continue their recovery journey. Our goal is to make sure our alumni leave Legacy with the skills and support they need to successfully integrate back into daily life.
