Adventure Therapy Program for Young Adults From New Mexico

Legacy Outdoor Adventures provides wilderness therapy to young people, aged 18 and older, from New Mexico and other states. Our licensed residential treatment center addresses substance use disorder (SUD), trauma, and co-occurring mental health conditions using evidence-based therapeutic modalities. Young people struggling with substance use or behavioral health challenges benefit from our integrative adventure therapy and clinical treatment that provides measurable healing outcomes, personal growth, and improved well-being.

A Healing Environment Beyond New Mexico

Our wilderness therapy program offers treatment in Loa, Utah. The serene, structured setting allows clients to focus on recovery. Our facility sits on land that offers a safe, purposeful outdoor environment where clients benefit from participating in clinical adventure therapy.

Nature-based therapy sessions provide space for reflection, growth, and stabilization of behavioral health. Many clients find that the distance from home and natural setting allows them to disengage from unhealthy routines, patterns, and environments. People travel from all over the Western United States, including New Mexico, Idaho, and Nevada, to attend our residential program.

What Sets Us Apart

Our approach to treatment goes beyond traditional models by combining clinical sophistication, structured care, and measurable outcomes. At Legacy, every aspect of the program is intentionally designed to support deep, lasting healing, not just short-term stabilization.

Adventure Therapy Integrated With Clinical Treatment

Our program combines adventure therapy 3 days per week with over 20 hours of structured clinical therapy. This balanced approach helps clients apply therapeutic insights in real-world settings, building resilience, confidence, and emotional regulation in a way that traditional settings often cannot replicate.

Individualized, Whole-Person Treatment
Plans

Every client receives a personalized treatment plan based on a comprehensive evaluation of their mental health, substance use, trauma history, and lifestyle factors. We treat the whole person by integrating clinical care, experiential work, and personal development into one cohesive process.

Trauma-Informed, Clinically Sophisticated
Approach

All care is delivered through a trauma-informed lens, ensuring emotional safety while addressing the underlying drivers of substance use and mental health challenges. Our licensed clinicians provide advanced therapeutic interventions in a structured, supportive environment.

Structured Residential Setting With High Clinical Engagement

As a licensed residential treatment center, we provide a highly structured environment that supports consistency, accountability, and focus. Clients engage in a full weekly schedule of therapy, adventure-based experiences, and guided reflection designed to promote sustainable change.

Low Client-to-Staff Ratio and Personalized
Attention

With a limited number of clients, our team is able to provide focused, individualized attention. This allows for deeper therapeutic relationships, more responsive care, and a treatment experience tailored to each client’s needs and goals.

Aftercare & Long-Term Recovery
Planning

We believe in comprehensive care and, as such, work with clients for long-term recovery planning. The Summit Graduation Phase is our way of ensuring that clients transition from treatment with the skills and planning needed for success. This program is embedded in our 90-day program and includes referrals and resources for further support post-treatment.

Adventure Therapy & Clinical Care

Clinical care at Legacy Outdoor Adventures uses evidence-based and alternative holistic therapies to treat SUD, trauma, and co-occurring mental health disorders.

Trauma-Informed Adventure Therapy

Young people in rehabilitation learn to build confidence, increase resilience, improve emotional regulation, and maintain healthy behavioral patterns through adventure therapy. The structured treatment helps people heal from trauma, addiction, and mental health issues.

Evidence-Based Behavioral Therapy

We use evidence-based clinical therapies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed behavioral therapy to help clients address SUD and underlying issues affecting their sobriety. Combining clinical modalities with experiential therapy and education provides clients with holistic treatment that improves rehabilitation outcomes.

Experiential Education and Personal Growth

Adventure and wilderness therapy use experiential activities, such as camping and group challenges, to teach essential skills to clients in treatment. We also use experiential education to help clients practice communication, leadership, and self-awareness in low-stress, real-world situations.

Holistic Wellness and Emotional Healing

We support mental, emotional, and physical well-being by ensuring our programs are mindful of each client’s needs, incorporate regular physical movement, and provide structured therapeutic experiences. Our residential program encourages clients to learn how to recognize healthy behaviors, thought patterns, and lifestyle choices to support lasting sobriety.

What to Expect: Daily Life in Our Adventure Therapy Program

Residential treatment involves multiple weekly therapy sessions, outdoor activities, and community workshops.

Clinical Therapy Days

Clients have four days of structured clinical care each week. We offer individual, group, psychoeducation, and behavioral therapy sessions tailored to each client’s unique needs.

Adventure Therapy Days

Our integrative approach involves combining clinical therapy with three days of guided outdoor experiences each week. Some of the activities clients may participate in during adventure therapy include backpacking, rock climbing, and team challenges that reinforce therapeutic insights.

Evenings and Reflection

Residential treatment gives clients time in the evenings to reflect through journaling, peer support groups that strengthen community connections, and mindful meditation. Spending time reflecting on insights and therapeutic goals raises self-awareness and increases accountability.

Weekends

Clients may participate in a variety of activities and events on weekends, including experiential activities, personal development workshops, or activities focused on improving physical wellness. Our residential center offers a variety of leisure activities for people to enjoy on weekends and in the afternoons after completing mandatory therapy.

Conditions We Treat

Legacy Outdoor Adventures treats trauma, behavioral issues, mental health disorders, and substance abuse. Our clinical team uses individual therapy and other services to address complex and co-occurring conditions.

Substance Use Disorders

We use evidence-based treatments to help young people recover from SUD and co-occurring mental health disorders. Our evidence-based clinical care and adventure therapy successfully addressed a wide range of substance use disorders, including alcohol use disorder (AUD), opioid addiction, and prescription medication abuse.

Mental Health Conditions

Co-occurring mental health disorders often require simultaneous treatment to reduce the risk of relapse during early recovery. We treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), depression and other mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions, and additional behavioral health issues.

Dual Diagnosis

We treat co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders with integrative care and an outcome-oriented approach. Addressing all active and underlying conditions during rehabilitation prepares clients for aftercare and ongoing recovery by equipping them with the tools to manage symptoms and side effects effectively.

Behavioral Challenges and Life Transitions

Our team of clinicians helps clients entering treatment who are struggling with life direction, independence, executive function, and emotional regulation. Young people benefit from peer support, life experiences, mentorship, and evidence-based treatments that help them overcome behavioral challenges and navigate life transitions during early recovery.

When to Seek Help for Substance Use or Mental Health

Families of young people should seek help if they notice warning signs of substance dependence, addiction, or behavioral issues affecting their loved one’s quality of life.

Some of the warning signs of addiction include an inability to stop abusing substances, social withdrawal, extreme mood swings, uncharacteristic behavioral or temperament changes, unintentional significant weight loss or gain, sleep disturbances, requiring more of a substance to achieve the same effects, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms during periods of abstinence.

Legacy Outdoor Adventures is here to help and can provide resources on interventions and facilitate the treatment process.

Comprehensive Support for Lasting Recovery

Clinicians utilize a range of services to assist clients and their loved ones in maintaining lasting recovery, including family engagement in treatment, life skills development, and alumni support.

Family Therapy and Support

We use therapy to strengthen relationships, repair family dynamics, and prepare families for the realities of long-term recovery. Families living in New Mexico can participate in their loved one’s rehabilitation through video calls, family therapy, and in-person visits.

Life Skills Development

Many people with SUD struggle with basic life skills. Legacy Outdoor Adventures ensures clients feel prepared for ongoing sobriety by helping them develop life skills, including time management, budgeting, effective communication, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and setting clear boundaries.

Alumni and Long-Term Support

After completing treatment, we continue to support clients through our community events, mentorship opportunities, and alumni services. Young people from New Mexico can receive alumni support through monthly follow-up phone calls and referrals to recovery resources.
