The Legacy Difference: Why Our Dual Diagnosis Program in Utah Stands Apart

Legacy Treatment Center is an evidence-based, premier residential treatment program. Our therapists use a client-centered approach that integrates comprehensive healthcare with cutting-edge interventions that include outdoor activities that harness the healing power of nature. As national leaders in adventure therapy and outdoor behavioral healthcare, we encourage you to participate in activities like backpacking, mountain biking, and fishing.

What We Treat: Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

Legacy’s treatment team uses innovative approaches to address mental health issues, trauma, and substance abuse issues. When you enter our treatment facility, you will take a comprehensive assessment to determine your diagnosis. The assessment helps us create a treatment plan with you.

Facts About Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis can occur because of genetics, trauma, stress, or exposure to drugs when you’re young. A few other facts are

  • Males between 18 and 44 are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with dual diagnosis.
  • Alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine are most commonly used to self-medicate.
  • People with a severe mental illness are more likely to have a substance abuse issue.

Substance Use Disorders We Treat

  • Alcohol addiction
  • Drug addiction
  • Prescription medication misuse

Mental Health Disorders We Treat

  • Depression and mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • ADHD
  • PTSD and trauma
  • Eating disorders
  • Borderline personality disorder

Why Accurate Diagnosis Matters in Dual Diagnosis Treatment Centers

Not everyone needs a complete psychological evaluation for mental health or substance abuse treatment. But at Legacy, we believe everyone deserves one. You may have been misdiagnosed before you came to us. Or you may have several labels that can or don’t fit you. Dartmouth University published “Dual Diagnosis: Mental Illness and Substance Abuse.” The article states, “More than half of persons who have a serious mental illness also have a substance use or abuse disorder.”   A comprehensive assessment helps us discover if there are underlying causes to your mental illness or substance abuse.

Furthermore, the assessment helps us meet your physical and mental wellness needs. We provide access to doctors, nurses, and therapists who understand your mental health challenges.

Our Dual Diagnosis Treatment Program: What to Expect

Entering a dual diagnosis treatment program can be overwhelming. You don’t know what to expect while you are with us. Our supportive mental health and substance use treatment team is here to help you begin your recovery journey. Once you’re admitted to our treatment program, you will work with your therapist to create a treatment plan. The plan will address your unique needs.

Our therapists are trained in the latest therapies that provide help with co-occurring disorders. Because co-occurring disorders are often linked with substance use disorder (SUD), our therapists are also trained in addiction recovery treatment approaches.

A Residential Treatment Program That Goes Beyond the Basics

Legacy has a hybrid treatment program combining CBT, DBT, and outdoor therapeutic programs. The integration of these programs aids you in building confidence, increasing self-esteem, and learn healthy coping skills. Outdoor behavior therapy is an effective treatment where you will find yourself and the path to becoming the person you want to be.

Integrated and Individualized Treatment Plans

Your treatment reflects your personal needs. During the time you’re with us, you will meet with your therapist to review and track the progress you have made. While doing this, you can integrate other treatment modalities into your plan. There is also the option to change one activity with another.

Detox and Medical Stabilization When Needed

The doctors and therapists are committed to your health and well-being. While completing your comprehensive assessment, you may be placed in a medical stabilization unit. We do this because detoxing from a substance like alcohol is dangerous and requires 24-hour medical monitoring. Once you have safely completed detoxification, our therapy team will place you in the necessary level of care. If you have an alcohol use disorder, you will be in an alcohol rehab program.

Experiential Therapies: Adventure, Art, Equine, and More

Outdoor behavioral healthcare is a powerful part of experiential therapy. Experiential therapy utilizes the benefits of movement and engaging in activities to guide your health journey. Some of the therapies Legacy offers are

  • Equine therapy – Animals can help you when emotional experiences challenge you. A trained mental health therapist will coach you as you feed, groom, and lead a horse. Equine therapy aids in emotional regulation, responsibility, and self-confidence. It’s an unbiased, nonjudgmental therapy that takes you outside and allows you to benefit from being outside.
  • Art therapy – Art is a creative, powerful way to express your emotions. Art therapy is a safe, secure space to develop emotional strength, learn conflict resolution, and grow.
  • Adventure therapyAdventure therapy is an evidence-based therapy that takes you outside. You are involved in physical activities that increase confidence and self-concept, teach you to ask for help, help others, learn how to trust, and many more positive behaviors.

Evidence-Based Therapies That Work

Successful treatment programs include evidence-based therapies to treat their clients. Legacy Treatment Center is recognized by the Joint Commission of Healthcare and the Association for Experiential Education. Our approach combines proven therapies, including

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – EMDR requires you to move your eyes in a specific manner while you process traumatic memories. This therapy is used to reduce feelings like anxiety that are connected to traumatic experiences and memories.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy – Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a talk therapy. CBT is a structured therapy. You talk with your therapist during a limited number of individual sessions. You can become aware of negative thinking patterns that create issues with your family, friends, and co-workers. By looking at these behaviors and thought patterns, you view challenging events clearly and learn how to respond to them in healthy ways.

Dialectical behavior therapy – Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is used if you experience intense emotions. It’s an evidence-based approach that effectively addresses mental health conditions like

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – PTSD is a complex mental health condition that is a result of a traumatic experience.
  • Substance use disorder – A SUD is the inability to control harmful impulses to use alcohol or drugs. You may use substances to self-medicate.
  • Anxiety – An anxiety disorder is a mental health issue that can cause cognitive and physical problems. An anxiety disorder creates a severe and uncontrollable reaction to situations. Your social, work, and personal life are negatively affected.
  • Depression – Depression is one of several types of mood disorders. The disorder creates feelings of sadness that won’t go away.

Supportive Therapies to Build a Foundation for Well-Being

  • Family therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy

The Legacy Approach: Evidence-Based Treatment Meets Outdoor Adventure

Physical or creative activities engage you in connecting to your mind and body. They can also create the focus necessary to overcome feelings of withdrawal, loss of control, or negative thoughts. The combination of various therapies to address your dual diagnosis gives you the foundation you need for a long-lasting recovery.

Why Nature Heals: The Power of Experiential Therapy in Mental Health Treatment

Nature is a source of physical and emotional healing. It gives you the space to relax, do something you enjoy, or process emotions. Being in nature provides many benefits, including

A Holistic Approach to Treating the Whole Person

Treating the whole person is a proven, effective way to reduce symptoms from mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Holistic therapy includes the mind, body, and spirit to reinforce your healing process. It uses alternative practices that integrate your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Examples of holistic therapies are

  • Yoga
  • Mindfulness – Meditation, listening (focus on one sound like a bird singing)
  • Outdoor activities – skiing, hiking, swimming

Developing Coping Mechanisms That Last a Lifetime

Holistic and talk therapies (CBT, DBT) guide you to reconnect with yourself and discover the root cause of harmful behaviors. Once you identify the causes, these therapies teach you how to replace negative behavior or thoughts with healthy ones. Adventure therapy is a healthy way to discover how to successfully reach goals, build accountability, learn life skills, and repair relationships. While you’re with us, you will use these lessons to make an aftercare plan.

Levels of Care and Treatment Options at Legacy Outdoor Adventures

Our clients have different needs when they’re with us. One of those needs includes being placed in the level of care required to meet their treatment needs. Legacy is licensed to provide residential, partial hospitalization, and outpatient treatment programs.

Our 90-Day Inpatient Treatment Program

Being diagnosed with a co-occurring disorder means you need comprehensive mental health and addiction treatment. To help you discover why you have harmful thought and behavior patterns, you will start in our 90-day residential treatment program.

When you begin your program with us, you will join others at “Base.” This is what we call our cabins and lodges. You will spend a few days each week here while we monitor your progress. While you’re at Base, you will attend group and individual therapy. You will also learn life skills like proper hygiene techniques and laundry.

After you complete your time at Base, you will move to Summit House. Summit House allows you to use what you learned while at Base. For example, at Summit House, you will cook your meals. As you near the end of your 90 days, you can make necessary calls, involve your family in your treatment, and make plans for your lasting recovery.

You may need more time in your recovery journey before you transition to your life outside of Legacy. We have step-down options that can guide you. Our options are

Partial Hospitalization (PHP) –  A PHP is a step-down from inpatient treatment. It’s a structured program that requires you to attend your treatment program 5 to 7 days a week for several hours. You can go home at night.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – An IOP is less intensive than a PHP. You will still go to the treatment center for group, family, relapse prevention, and individual therapy several days a week and be there for multiple hours. You can go home for the evening. Some people are living in a sober living home while they attend an IOP program.

Outpatient Treatment (OP) – OP programs require you to attend therapy sessions, but the days and hours spent at the treatment center are less than any other program. It provides day treatment with the flexibility to live at home, work, or attend school.

Aftercare and Sober Living Support for Long-Term Recovery

As you approach the end of your 90-day residential program, you will make a plan that includes outside groups and resources to continue supporting your long-term recovery. You should find people who know what you’re going through and can be there for you.

We stand apart from other dual diagnosis treatment centers in Utah because we meet your wellness needs.
