EMDR Therapy in Utah: Healing From Trauma at Legacy Outdoor Adventures

While every person is vulnerable to experiencing traumatic circumstances and events throughout their lives, every person is also worthy and deserving of achieving lasting well-being and healing from trauma. At Legacy Outdoor Adventures, we have created a unique residential treatment experience that blends traditional clinical modalities with innovative and engaging treatment interventions.

Rediscover a Life Beyond Trauma

When past trauma, traumatic memories, and other difficult life experiences are not properly integrated into daily life, they can contribute to a wide range of mental, emotional, and physical health problems over time. From emotional dysregulation, symptoms of panic, and distressing memories to negative beliefs, low self-esteem, uncomfortable physical sensations, and more, these symptoms can impair an individual’s ability to function normally or well in daily life.

Fortunately, our trauma-informed treatment programs guide and support clients in addressing addictive behaviors, mental health issues, and trauma-related disorders to facilitate wellness in every aspect of their lives. Different from other treatment facilities, we are committed to providing effective treatment by utilizing outcome-informed care. This matters because, by focusing on measurable healing throughout evidence-based treatments like EMDR, our clients have the best chance at achieving long-term healing and sobriety in a setting where they feel truly supported.

Defining Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

One of the many treatment modalities that we use with clients at our facility is known as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Simply put, EMDR is a time-efficient psychotherapy (talk therapy) approach that helps people process and integrate traumatic memories. The primary goal of EMDR is to reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories by reprocessing them in a safe therapeutic environment with the guidance and support of an EMDR therapist.

How EMDR Works

During an initial session, an EMDR therapist will first work with their client to build therapeutic rapport, establish client safety, and implement coping mechanisms before engaging in memory access. These steps are critical to reduce any potential for retraumatization while preparing a client for the next steps.

In an EMDR therapy session, a client will be asked to focus on a specific traumatic event or distressing memory, including the images, thoughts, emotions, and other sensory information connected to the memory. While the client holds this memory in their mind, an EMDR therapist will use bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements, as well as taps or tones, to help the client process the memory.

Research shows that bilateral stimulation can help cognitive processes transform beyond a state of being “stuck,” which can be common as a result of trauma, into a more integrated and processed state. This reprocessing can be especially effective for reducing the intensity of negative beliefs and uncomfortable body sensations associated with the traumatic memory. It can also influence positive shifts in thoughts and emotions related to the memory, facilitating strengthened autonomy and a sense of well-being.

What EMDR Can Help Treat

EMDR is well-researched for treating a variety of trauma-related conditions and symptoms, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic attacks, phobias, dissociation, chronic pain, grief, and more.

Why Choose EMDR in Utah at Legacy Outdoor Adventures?

At Legacy Outdoor Adventures, we utilize EMDR with other trauma therapy modalities like adventure therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), internal family systems (IFS) therapy, motivational interviewing, and more to help clients develop reliable tools to cope with triggers and symptoms of traumatic memories and past experiences.

Our Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing in Utah

At our facility, we begin the therapeutic process with EMDR by assisting clients in creating a solid foundation for treatment, and this includes strengthening emotional regulation skills. We encourage clients to practice mindfulness, grounding, and other sensory techniques in a safe space before continuing the process.

What Makes Our EMDR Therapy in Utah Unique

Alongside ensuring that our clients have proper skills and support in place, we also believe in the importance of having our clients nurture connections with the great outdoors. Being surrounded by the beauty of nature can not only strengthen motivation and purpose for healing but can also facilitate present-moment awareness, informing feelings of joy, peace, and gratitude for all that is yet to come.

The Role of EMDR in Adventure Therapy

When integrated in adventure therapy, EMDR can help clients build new skills while strengthening self-esteem and resilience to life’s challenges. Adventure therapy offers unique opportunities for clients to heal from past trauma through outdoor challenges and group dynamics. This provides clients with natural and supportive settings to be vulnerable and authentic, which can enhance the overall therapeutic process.

Benefits of EMDR for Long-Term Recovery

Due to its ability to effectively process traumatic memories and reduce associated negative impacts on a general scale, some specific benefits of EMDR also include:
  • Reducing symptoms of anxiety and panic by addressing the root cause
  • Improving overall mood
  • Reducing symptoms of depression by transforming negative thoughts and beliefs
  • Alleviating symptoms of fear and avoidance
  • Facilitating whole-person well-being of the mind, body, and spirit

Is EMDR Right for You?

EMDR may be a good fit for those struggling with the ongoing effects of traumatic or otherwise distressing memories, as well as other symptoms of trauma. It is also possible that you are experiencing ongoing effects of trauma without consciously recognizing it or categorizing it as such. In other words, EMDR may be right for you if you are experiencing:
  • Trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Negative thoughts or self-beliefs
  • Unexplained emotional reactions
  • Physical sensations or symptoms of emotional distress
If you are familiar with these symptoms or sensations, some additional considerations to determine whether EMDR may be right for you may include:
  • If your present experiences are being dictated or controlled by your past
  • If you have not experienced positive lasting results from other treatments
  • If you are dealing with phobias, panic attacks, or other symptoms of trauma that control your daily life
