Program and Treatment Approach
Guiding Young Men to Responsible Adulthood, one Adventure at a Time

The primary purpose for returning to the treatment center each week is to focus on intensive clinical programming.  During treatment center days, each client participates in multiple individual and group therapy sessions facilitated by licensed therapists.  The previous week’s adventure is debriefed to identify therapeutic progress, and the following week’s adventure is planned around individual treatment objectives.  Time at the treatment center also allows clients to shower and do laundry, and provides opportunities to practice self-care and basic life skills.  The intention behind effectively utilizing the treatment center is to maximize the therapeutic benefit of the adventure and wilderness therapy, and to create an effective level of synergy between treatment center and field.

The Legacy program is designed to walk students through the creation, application and integration of a Life Success Plan that will help guide them toward self-fulfillment and success throughout their lives.

Legacy works where a client is and helps them through the stages of change.  Many clients will face the following stages in their process.  As clients move through the change process Legacy individualizes by having two treatment centers.  The first is the Legacy treatment center and the second is the Summit House treatment center.

Assessment/Awareness (Getting past denial and to start to see their need for change)

Client creates a Life Success Plan (LSP) that will guide him through the program and become the foundation for his future life. The LSP is developed by the client with the help of the treatment team and family. The LSP is based on the client's personal vision for himself as a happy, successful adult (The Man I Want to Be), along with information drawn from various assessments, exercises and assignments.

Some of the components include:

·               Personal life assessment and evaluation exercise

·               Values and attributes group

·               Clinical Assessment review

·               List of identified obstacles (internal and external)

·               List of Assets(internal and external)

·               Family assessment and feedback exercise

·               Substance abuse / addiction assessment

·               Creation of Individual Success Plan

Acceptance/Realization

This is designed to help each client with the practical experience of applying his vision for the future to everyday living. Clients are challenged through a series of weekly wilderness adventure activities. On each of these weekly activities, each client is assigned a different role and set of responsibilities in the group i.e. (Expedition Leader, Navigator, Cook, Equipment Manager, Safety Officer, Photographer).  Each new set of responsibilities and each new adventure creates new and different challenges and opportunities to employ the individual success plan.

An integral part of the Action Phase is the Weekly Adventure Journal. The Weekly Adventure Journal is a tool to help apply the components of the LSP to everyday life. It helps the client do such things as anticipate challenges, apply new strategies, and stay connected with personal goals and vision.

Other components include:

·               A deliberate mentoring process with experienced professional wilderness guides

·               Small planned unavoidable successes

·               Group support and feedback

·               Creating self-accountability (setting the bar)

·               Application of a weekly value

·               Life skills

·               Integration of a clinical treatment plan

Action/Commitment
Client finalizes his comprehensive Life Success Plan in preparation for leaving Legacy and moving on to the next step.  The LSP becomes each client’s personal road map for his journey to manhood.  By the completion of the program, each young man has created a plan for success for his future, and has gained ownership and confidence in that plan by living it daily throughout his stay here. Upon graduation, the Life Success Plan serves as a guide for the next step in life and a positive course for the future.

 Other components include:

·               Graduation ceremony

·               Family workshop

·               Aftercare planning

·               Relapse prevention plan

·               Aftercare placement support

·               Follow up phone calls

Summit House

The Summit House Treatment Center is an intermediate level of care that helps young men transition from primary treatment to extended care. We have designed a 5-week program where clients will focus on taking ownership and responsibility for their own recovery and putting it into action. The 5-week curriculum will center around them creating a well-planned and practical daily routine and weekly schedule for their recovery, a detailed relapse prevention plan that helps them be aware of their warning signs of relapse, they will participate in mapping out high risk situations and learn strategies of how to navigate those situations, and they will take ownership of researching and contacting extended care or sober living programs so that they take ownership for their recovery and in their life.

The daily schedule of phase II is designed to engage clients and in a way that they will develop a vision for what life looks like in recovery, how to accomplish goals and take care of responsibilities each day, and living each day with a sense of purpose. In an apartment style living situation with 24-hour professional staffing clients will learn and practice life skills, develop a workout routine at a local gym, attend daily relapse prevention groups, meet with a licensed therapist weekly, attend daily IOP programming, attend community 12 step meetings, participate in community service activities, and develop their own recovery and relapse prevention plans.

Weekend adventures are the highlight of the week in the phase II program. Clients will be able to plan and execute weekend adventure trips that emphasize having fun in recovery and how to develop and utilize a support community.

The trips include:

·               rock climbing,

·               mountain biking,

·               canyoneering,

·               skiing,

·               kayaking, and

·               white water rafting in all of the best places Utah has to offer.

Weekend trips also include more urban adventures where clients: attend Utah Jazz games,  Real Salt Lake soccer games, movies, lectures and speaker events, and other meaningful things that engage the client and show them how to have a fun meaningful time without using drugs and alcohol. When traveling on these adventures clients will learn how to find and utilize local recovery communities. In all of this an emphasis is put on having fun in recovery and living life as an honorable man.
